Table Setting Tips

Knowledge of proper table settings is essential for creating the right dining ambience! Be it a casual or formal dining, there are various table settings to accommodate different requirements. There are different ways to set up table. Here are the commonly used guidelines for most places.

The general rule with utensils is to start from the outside of your place setting, and work your way toward the service plate (the main meal plate): soup spoon first, then fish knife and fork, then service knife and fork.

•	A place setting should be set for all the guests at the table even if they are not eating.
•	All flatware should be placed evenly on both sides of the place.
•	Settings are set for the right-handed guest.
•	Avoid setting excess flatware not intended to use during the meal.

Formal Settings
There are too many table settings out there. Now letâ€™s focus on the formal setting! And for your information, casual place settings are merely modified from the formal settings.

A.	Napkin: Placed on top of the service plate or on the left of the forks
B.	Service Plate / (C) Soup Bowl: Placed at the centre of the placement.
D.	Butter Plate: Placed to the top left side of the service plate. Butter Knife: Placed horizontally on top of the butter plate.
H.	Forks: Placed on the left side of the service plate, in order of when they will be used, starting from the outermost.
K.	Knives: Placed on the right side of the service plate, in order of when they will be used, starting from the outermost with the cutting edge towards the service plate.
M.	Spoon: Placed on the right side of the outermost knife, in order of when they will be used, starting from the outermost.
N.	Dessert Fork and Spoon: Placed above the service plate in opposite directions or can be brought out just before dessert is served.
	Glasses: Up to 5 glasses can be placed.
E.	Water Goblet - Placed directly above the knives.
F.	Champagne Flute - Placed on the right and slightly below the water goblet.
G.	White Wine Glass - Placed on the right and slightly below the champagne flute. Red Wine Glass - Placed on the right and slightly below the white wine glass. Sherry Glass - Placed on the right and slightly below the red wine glass.
